Tom Tom Club - Suboceana (1988)
Tom Tom Club made a brief comeback with this deep house classic, in reference to the Marshall Jefferson Mix. Sounding very similar to 'Baby Want To Ride ; but deeper and with lots of bongos, his mix stood out as quality house and superior post production. Also came with Magic Juan Atkins Detroit style mixes.

The Stone Roses - Fools Gold (1989)
"Fools Gold" became the band's biggest commercial hit at the time. It was their first single to reach the top ten of the UK Singles Chart and stayed in the Top 75 for fourteen weeks, peaking at number eight
The dance-oriented song showcased the rhythm section of Mani on bass and Reni on percussion. The main drum beat is a one-bar loop originally taken from "Hot Pants - I'm Coming, I'm Coming, I'm Coming" sung by Bobby Byrd with John "Jabo" Starks on drums and produced James Brown , Brownstone Records 1972.
In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Fools Gold" at number 32 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.
Australian radio station Triple J voted "Fools Gold" number 76 in its Triple J Hottest 100 of all time in July 2009.
Run-D.M.C. sampled the bassline and drum beat of "Fools Gold" for their hit "What's It All About?" in 1990.
"Fools Gold" was "mashed-up" with "If Your Girl Only Knew" by Aaliyah for the bootleg "If Only Your Girlfriend Was Stoned"
A "Fools Gold" sample is used in the 1990 Bananarama song "Only Your Love".
The song has been remixed since by Rabbit In The Moon, Grooverider, Tall Paul, and others, the original remains the best.

Cheryl Lynn - Shake It Up Tonight (1981)
Discovered on the Gong Show by producer Bob Johnston. Lynn was signed to Columbia after Ahmed Ertegun from Atlantic couldn't make their initial meeting. After Johnston threatened to camp outside David Paich's home if he didn't work with Lynn, Johnston and Paich started on the project after signing with Columbia Records. Lynn released her first and biggest hit, "Got to Be Real," which was penned by Toto keyboardist David Paich, David Foster and Lynn. The song peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the R&B chart. The success of the single prompted a full scale debut album. Titled Cheryl Lynn, it was produced by Paich. The album sold over a million copies and peaked at #5 on Billboard's R&B albums chart and #23 on Billboard's top 200 album charts. The follow-up single, "Star Love"', also became a hit.
During Lynn's debut album's run, members of the rock group Toto were putting together their debut album. During the production Lynn was asked to provided the female backing vocal on the single, "Georgy Porgy,". The single peaked at #48 on Billboard's Pop charts. Although Toto would go on to chart more than a dozen pop hits throughout the years, it was Lynn's vocal on "Georgy Porgy" that aided the group in charting their only R&B (#18) and Dance (#80) hit on the Billboard charts.
In 1981, Ray Parker, Jr. produced "Shake It Up Tonight", a major club R&B hit from Lynn's third album, In the Night. The following year, Luther Vandross was called on to produced Lynn's fourth album, Instant Love. The 2nd single off the album, "If This World Were Mine" - a 1982 duet with Luther Vandross that covered a Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell song, has become an urban contemporary classic. For her fifth album, Preppie, Lynn produced most of the tracks with the exception of the single "Encore" (#1 R&B hit) - which was written and produced by the Minneapolis funk duo, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. It became Lynn's second #1 single. In 1989, Lynn released the top 10 single, "Every Time I Try To Say Goodbye", from her eighth album, Whatever It Takes.

Barbara Mason - Another Man (1983)
She had her first hit single in 1965 with her self-penned Top 10 hit, "Yes, I'm Ready" (number five pop, number two R&B), a bubbly soul-pop hit that spotlighted her high, girlish vocals. One of the first examples of the sweet, lush sound that came to be called Philly soul, she had modest success throughout the rest of the decade on the small Arctic label, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 again in 1965 with "Sad, Sad Girl", and "Oh How It Hurts" in 1967-68.
In the early and mid 1970s, Mason toughened her persona considerably, singing about sexual love and infidelity with a frankness that was uncommon for a female soul singer in songs like "Bed and Board," "From His Woman to You," and "Shackin' Up." But the production, as it was throughout soul in the '70s, was more funk-oriented, and at times Mason would interrupt her singing to deliver some straight-talkin' raps about romance. Curtis Mayfield produced her on a cover version of Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love," which restored her to the pop Top 40 and R&B Top Ten in 1973; "From His Woman to You" (the response to Shirley Brown's single "Woman to Woman") and "Shackin' Up" were also solid soul sellers in the mid '70s. After leaving Buddah Records in 1975, she only dented the charts periodically, with "I Am Your Woman, She Is Your Wife" (1978), "Another Man" (1983), and a couple of other singles. 'Another Man' , while only barely hitting the pop charts, made a considerable inpact on the dancefloor. Released on West End records and championed by Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage, the song had a fat bassline and uncommon lyrics about a man cheating on her with his gay boyfriend. The song to this day continues to be played in nightclubs and R&B stations worldwide.

Fat Larrys Band - Act Like You Know (1982)
Fat Larry's Band was an American R&B/funk band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who enjoyed some commercial success in the early 1980s.
Formed by drummer and vocalist "Fat" Larry James (August 2, 1949 - December 5, 1987) in 1977, band members included trumpeter/flutist Art Capehart, saxophonist Doug Jones, trombonist/alto saxophonist Jimmy Lee, guitarist Ted Cohen, percussionist and lead singer Darryl Grant, bassist Larry La Bes, and keyboardist Erskine Williams. The band's biggest hits were "Act Like You Know" (1982) (which later appeared on the soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City) and "Zoom", which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart in October 1982. They had three other hits in the UK: "Center City", "Boogie Town" and "Looking for Love Tonight".
James also played with The Delfonics and Blue Magic, and managed the group Slick.
James died from a heart attack, at the age of 38, on December 5, 1987, and the band folded.
The opening drum break from "Down on the Avenue", from the band's first album, Feel It (Stax 1977), has been sampled by many hip hop artists, including N.W.A (Straight Outta Compton), Ice-T, Jungle Brothers and Run-D.M.C.
I also sampled 'Act Like you Know' for my Downstream Mix of Deep Forest's 'Sweet Lullaby' , which came out on Epic Records in the US. (it was on the commercially avaliable vinyl 12" and CD single, and the promotional 2X 12' vinyl.

Lost Witness - Red Sun Rising (1999)
Lost Witness is an English trance production and DJ , composed of Simon Paul (also known as Si Paul) . Also part of the collaboration are songwriter Edward Barton, writer of the 1983 Jane & Barton single, "It's a Fine Day" (later covered by Opus III in 1992), as well as vocalist Danielle Alexander.
Paul also recorded under the aliases Dusk Til Dawn and The Eden Project.
A number of their singles were released on major electronic dance label Ministry of Sound. Some included remixes by English producer and DJ Lange.
While I'm not a huge fan of trance, rhis uplifting vocal trance classic is beautiful, its moving , and well known among tranceheads. Classic.

Living Colour - Elvis Is Dead (1990)
"Elvis Is Dead" is a song by Living Colour featuring Little Richard off the album Time's Up. Before, during, and after Little Richard's spoken-word performance, many voices speak the song title, concluded by one announcing, "Elvis has left the building!" After, the band twisted the line "Maybe I've a reason to believe we all will be received in Graceland" from Paul Simon's "Graceland" to yield the refrain, "I've got a reason to believe we all won't be received at Graceland." They also quote Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" in stating, "Elvis was a hero to most," but diverge in adding, "But that's beside the point."
The 12" had 'Elvis Is Dead ' as the B-Side to the single ' Love Rears It's Ugly Head'. 'Elvis Is Dead remixes were done by Zanzibar DJ and worldwide house legend Tony Humphries. They were smooth and groovy, not as edgy as you would expect from a Living Colour remix, but the remix worded big-time.

Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night (1984)
"Sunglasses at Night" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Corey Hart. It was the first single to be released off his debut album, 1984's First Offense, and became a hit single in the United States, rising to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1984. The song is considered by many to be a classic of 1980s pop rock and New Wave music, combining an unflagging synthesizer hook, characteristic arpeggio, rock guitar, obscure lyrics and a punk undercurrent throughout the song.
The song is included in numerous hits collections of the period, especially in the U.S., but it was not as popular throughout the rest of the world at the time. Peaking at #24 in Hart's native Canada, it was not a hit in Europe and failed to chart at all in the UK.
In 2002, 19 years after the original version release, the song was re-recorded, with Original 3 as the producer of the 2002 remake.
* The song was covered in electro style by Tiga and Zyntherius in 2001.
* Former N- Sync singer JC Chasez featured the song's signature synthesized hook throughout "Come To Me", a track from his 2004 album Schizophrenic, for which he credited Hart as a co-writer.
* In 2006, the song was covered by rap group The Federation with rappers E-40 and Keak Da Sneak, retitled as "I Wear My Stunna Glasses at Night", a reference to the popularity of "Stunna Shades" within the hyphy movement. 2007 saw covers by Dj Size feat. J. Lourenzo and Francis Soto (nu metal version), plus a mashup by UK mashup artist Cheekyboy of Justin Timberlake's Sexyback using elements of this song.
* Divine Brown samples the main riff in her 2008 song Sunglasses, and near the end of the track she says the tag line, "I wear my sunglasses at night". Voodoo & Serano covered "Sunglasses at Night" in 2009.
The song made #50 in VH1's 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs of all Time.

2 In A Room - Somebody In The House Say Yeah! (1988)
2 In A Room was a Dominican hip hop, freestyle music and house music duo, from Washington Heights, New York, which includes rapper Rafael "Dose" Vargas and producer/remixer Roger "Rog Nice" Pauletta, who was replaced by Edwin "Floodlight" Ovalles after 1990. They are best known for their 1990 hit single "Wiggle It". It spent two weeks at #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart (and #3 in the UK Singles Chart, and then crossed over to mainstream radio, and climbed to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually becoming a gold single. Before that, they were known for a track called "Do What You Want" (1990) that got a lot of club and DJ play in New York and Chicago.
"El Trago (the Drink)" was a #86 Billboard Hot 100 chart entry (the last of their pop hits), but they did chart several more singles on the dance chart through the 1990s.
Their first release in the UK (and the US - on Cutting Records) was "Somebody In The House Say Yeah!" in the late part of 1988. Not as well known and it did not cross over, still it was big with underground house DJ's, particularly ones playing the popular Todd Terry style sound of the time.

Proyecto Uno - Brinca (1991)
Proyecto Uno (English: Project One) is a Dominican-American merenrap group which helped popularize a style of music which blend merengue with rap, techno, dancehall reggae and hip-hop music. The band was founded in New York Citys East Side in 1989 by Nelson Zapata. Originally formed as traditional merengue band, Proyecto Uno received recognition in the 1990s after incorporating modern Afro-American and North American music. The group won a Billboard latin Music Award , an Emmy award, and countless others.
In 1991 this 12" was serviced in the US to DJs and it did well with a variety of mixes, including an underground house (rave) mix that helped it cross over to radio. Call it hip house or latin house, it still moved dancefloors.

Animotion - Obsession (1985)
"Obsession" is a 1985 song recorded by New Wave synth-dance group Animotion. The song hit number six in the United States, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinct video that received heavy rotation on MTV.
"Obsession" is a mainstay on 1980s compilations and is featured in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as part of the New Wave radio station Wave 103. It has also been used as the theme song for WWE Saturday Night's Main Event (aired on NBC) and FashionTelevisionChannel, as well as MTV's House of Style, and it was featured in the 2000 comedy film Lucky Numbers. Various artists have covered the song, including The Azoic in 2004, and the Sugababes, for their album - Taller In More Ways, in 2005. The song has been used as the opening theme for the internationally syndicated Canadian program FT - FashionTelevision since it premiered in 1986. It has recently been featured in the films El Cantante and Adventureland, the TV show Weeds and was featured in the trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine and the movie itself.
It was originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des Barres in 1983, although the recording did not perform well. This version was prominently featured in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, most notably in a scene in which a male stripper gyrates his crotch in Lesley Ann Warren's face in sync with the rhythm of the song. The song was featured on the film's soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts.

The Clash - Rock The Casbah (1982)
Rock the Casbah" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash. It was released as the third single from their fifth album, Combat Rock. The song reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. (their only top 10 single Stateside) and, along with the track "Mustapha Dance", it also reached number eight on the dance chart. It is the band's highest charting single worldwide.
The song gives a fabulist account of a ban on rock music by the Sharif or King being defied by the population, who proceed to "rock the casbah". The King orders jet fighters to bomb any people in violation of the ban. The pilots ignore the orders, and instead play rock music on their cockpit radios.
The song′s lyrics feature various Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, and Sanskrit loan-words, such as sharif, bedouin, sheikh, kosher, rāga, muezzin, minaret, and casbah.
In 2006, the conservative National Review released their list of the top 50 "Conservative Rock Songs", with "Rock the Casbah" at #20, noting its frequent requests during the Iraq War.Despite, or perhaps because of, its popularity with soldiers during the Gulf War, "Rock the Casbah" was one of the songs deemed inappropriate by Clear Channel following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In one of the campfire scenes late in the 2007 documentary Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, a Granada friend states that Strummer wept when he heard that the phrase "Rock the Casbah" was written on an American bomb that was to be detonated on Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War.

Abba - The Visitors (1982)
"The Visitors", originally "Den första" (meaning "The First"), was the final single release from Swedish pop group ABBA's studio album of the same name, released in the United States in 1982. The lead vocal was sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad and its mix of psychedelic, Indian-flavoured verse melody and 1980s synth rock in the chorus, was an unusual and intriguing step for ABBA.
The official stated theme is a protest against the mistreatment of political dissidents in the Soviet Union at the time, as ABBA seemed to input political issues into their lyrics in the final days of the group. That said, Björn deliberately made the lyrics obscure enough to be open to other interpretations.
In 1982, the album The Visitors was banned from the Soviet Union, though it is likely due to the band's participation on the United States Information Agency television special, Let Poland Be Poland, broadcast via satellite around the world on January 31, 1982. The show, which also featured Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Orson Welles, Henry Fonda and U.S. President Ronald Reagan, was a public protest against the then-recent imposition of martial law in Poland.
"The Visitors" was released as the album's second (and final) single in the US instead of "Head Over Heels", which remained as the b-side.
The single peaked just outside of the Top 60 at #63 on the singles chart in the U.S., and a double A-sided "The Visitors" / "When All Is Said and Done" 12" single reached #8 on the Billboard dance chart. The song did not have any success in any other countries.
