The song reached number one on the UK Single Charts in 1999, knocking off The Offspring's song "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" and scoring Armand Van Helden his first UK No.1. The recording of this song went about in an unconventional way; the track was laid down, Van Helden went off and did his own thing, and left Harden to his own devices.
The strings featured in this song sampled the disco song "Dance With U", originally performed by Carrie Lucas. The drums are sampled from the 1992 classic house record "Plastic Dreams" by Jaydee. In 1000 UK # 1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Armand Van Helden explained, "You Don't Know Me was a perfect example of putting 2 simple things together, the beats from Jaydee's Plastic Dreams and a disco loop from Carrie Lucas The full version of the track features an intro sampling dialogue from the Dial M for Monkey segment of the animated TV series Dexter's Laboratory.
This song is also heavily sampled in Doman & Gooding's 2009 single "Runnin'."
